Harley Quinn, initially Dr. Harleen Quinzel, is a fictional character appearing in DC Comics. She first appeared in The Batman Adventures #12 (September 1993) as a character created for the Batman: The Animated Series (Batman Adventures) TV show.

Originally a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum, Harleen Quinzel was assigned to treat the Joker. She became infatuated with him, eventually falling in love and adopting the persona of Harley Quinn, his sidekick and lover.

Harley Quinn is depicted as a highly intelligent, though mentally unstable, character. Her relationship with the Joker is a central element of her story, often portrayed as abusive and dysfunctional. Later iterations of Harley have emphasized her growth, independence, and anti-heroic tendencies, teaming up with characters like Poison Ivy and becoming a complex and popular figure.
