Harley Quinn is a fictional character appearing in DC Comics, known primarily as the Joker's accomplice and lover. She first appeared in The Batman Adventures #12 (September 1993), a comic book based on the animated TV show.
Originally Dr. Harleen Quinzel, a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum, she was assigned to treat the Joker. During their sessions, she became infatuated with him and was manipulated into helping him escape. Adopting the persona of Harley Quinn, she embraced a life of crime alongside the Joker.
She is characterized by her jester-like attire, her Brooklyn accent, and her twisted sense of humor. While initially completely devoted to the Joker, her character development over time has shown her break free from his influence and establish herself as an anti-hero, sometimes teaming up with other DC characters.
