Superior Octopus is a persona adopted by Doctor Otto Octavius in Marvel Comics. A brilliant but egotistical scientist, Octavius's mind was nearing death. Desperate to survive, he enacted a plan to swap minds with Peter Parker, the Amazing Spider-Man.
This mind-swap succeeded, leaving Parker trapped in Octavius's dying body while Octavius inhabited Parker's healthier, more powerful form. Initially driven by his villainous tendencies, Octavius, as Spider-Man, began to adopt some of Parker's heroic ideals. He resolved to be a better Spider-Man, hence the moniker "Superior."
The character's first appearance as Superior Spider-Man was in *Amazing Spider-Man* #700 (2012). This era saw Octavius using Spider-Man's abilities with a more ruthless efficiency, often employing methods that Parker would never condone.
Later, circumstances led to Peter Parker regaining control of his body. Octavius then transferred his consciousness into a clone body, eventually becoming the Superior Octopus. He has since oscillated between antagonistic and more heroic roles, sometimes working alongside other heroes and villains alike, while at other times working independently.
