Luke Skywalker, portrayed by Mark Hamill, first appeared in the 1977 film Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.
In Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi, Skywalker is a disillusioned recluse living on the isolated island of Ahch-To. Haunted by his past failures in training Kylo Ren, he has severed his connection to the Force and refuses to train Rey.
Throughout The Last Jedi, Rey attempts to persuade him to rejoin the fight against the First Order, but he is resistant. He eventually teaches her some lessons about the Force but remains committed to his self-imposed exile. Later, he appears as a Force projection to confront Kylo Ren on Crait, allowing the remaining Resistance fighters to escape. This act of immense power drains him, and he peacefully becomes one with the Force, effectively dying.
