Luke Skywalker, first appearing in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, is a pivotal character in the Star Wars saga. In Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Episode 8), an older, disillusioned Skywalker is found living in self-imposed exile on the remote island of Ahch-To.
Haunted by the perceived failure of his Jedi Order and his role in the fall of his nephew, Ben Solo (Kylo Ren), he has severed himself from the Force. Rey, seeking to become a Jedi, seeks him out as a last hope for the Resistance.
Initially reluctant to train her, Skywalker is eventually moved by her persistence and the dire circumstances facing the galaxy. He imparts crucial lessons, though his focus is not on creating another Jedi Knight, but on demonstrating the failures of the Jedi of old. Ultimately, he redeems himself by projecting a Force illusion across the galaxy to confront Kylo Ren, giving the Resistance time to escape. This act of immense power exhausts him, leading to his peaceful death and becoming one with the Force.
