Luke Skywalker, as portrayed in *Star Wars: The Last Jedi* (Episode 8), is a disillusioned and isolated figure. First appearing in *Star Wars: A New Hope* (1977), he became a legendary Jedi Master who helped defeat the Galactic Empire. However, the events leading up to *The Last Jedi* have profoundly impacted him.
Haunted by a failure in his Jedi academy involving his nephew, Ben Solo (Kylo Ren), Luke has retreated to the remote island of Ahch-To. He's severed himself from the Force and abandoned his responsibility to the galaxy. He refuses to train Rey, initially rejecting her pleas to rejoin the fight against the First Order.
Throughout the film, Luke confronts his past mistakes and grapples with the legacy of the Jedi Order. Ultimately, he rediscovers his purpose and uses his connection to the Force to project himself across the galaxy to confront Kylo Ren, giving the Resistance time to escape. This act of immense power drains him, leading to his death and becoming one with the Force.
