Carl Lucas, better known as Luke Cage, first appeared in Luke Cage, Hero for Hire #1 (June 1972) from Marvel Comics. A product of the Bronze Age of comics and primarily set in Earth-616 continuity, Cage is a man of immense strength and durability.
Originally a convict, Carl Lucas volunteered for an experimental procedure while incarcerated. This experiment, intended to accelerate cellular regeneration, instead granted him superhuman powers after being sabotaged. Possessing impenetrable skin and enhanced strength, he escaped and adopted the alias Luke Cage.
Operating as a "Hero for Hire," Cage initially offered his services to anyone who could afford them. Over time, he became a more selfless hero, fighting for justice and protecting the innocent. He is also known as Power Man.
