Luke Cage, originally known as Carl Lucas, is a Marvel Comics superhero. He first appeared in Luke Cage, Hero for Hire #1 (June 1972), a product of the Bronze Age era of comics.
On Earth-616 (the main Marvel Universe continuity), Lucas was wrongly convicted of a crime and volunteered for a medical experiment while incarcerated. This experiment granted him superhuman strength and unbreakable skin.
Adopting the moniker "Luke Cage, Power Man," he used his newfound abilities to become a hero for hire, often working in the criminal underbelly of New York City. He is considered a Luke Cage Classic character.
