Luke Cage, originally known as Carl Lucas, is a Marvel Comics character first appearing in Luke Cage, Hero for Hire #1 (June 1972) from the Bronze Age. He is a prominent figure within the Earth-616 continuity.
Wrongfully convicted and incarcerated, Carl Lucas underwent an experimental procedure while imprisoned. This experiment, designed to accelerate cellular regeneration, granted him superhuman strength and near-impenetrable skin.
Upon his release, Lucas adopted the name Luke Cage and began operating as a "Hero for Hire" in Harlem, New York. He uses his powers for profit initially, but later develops a stronger sense of justice and dedication to protecting his community. He has also been called Power Man.
