The version of Man-Bat most associated with cartoons is Kirk Langstrom, a zoologist specializing in bats. He seeks to cure his own deafness and develops an extract from bat DNA.
In a manner consistent with the comic book origin story, desperate, Langstrom tests the formula on himself. He is successful in curing his deafness. But, as a side effect he transforms into a monstrous, humanoid bat creature. While he retains his intellect, his personality is suppressed by the bat-like instincts.
The character is commonly associated with the animated tv series *Batman: The Animated Series*. Though the exact first appearance is disputed because of his popularity, he is first seen on tv in 1977 in the *The New Adventures of Batman* cartoon.
Langstrom develops an antidote, but the transformation and reversion process repeats frequently. Often, Man-Bat is a dangerous antagonist to Batman. When Langstrom has his personality in control, he sometimes assists Batman.
