The Atom is a superhero identity shared by several characters in the DC Comics universe. The most well-known is Dr. Raymond Palmer, a physics professor at Ivy Town University.
Ray Palmer discovered a means to shrink himself to subatomic size using white dwarf star matter. He developed a special lens for his costume, granting him control over his size, from minuscule to gigantic.
As the Atom, Palmer is a member of the Justice League of America. He uses his shrinking powers for espionage, scientific exploration, and combat.
Other characters who have used the Atom identity include Al Pratt, the Golden Age Atom with superhuman strength and density, and Ryan Choi, Palmer's protege who took over as the Atom after his mentor's disappearance.
