Cassandra Cain is a DC Comics character known primarily as Batgirl. Created by Kelley Puckett and Damion Scott, she first appeared in 1999's Batman #567.
Cassandra is the daughter of assassins David Cain and Lady Shiva. She was intentionally raised without speech or social interaction, instead trained from birth to read body language and become the ultimate martial artist. This left her functionally mute and illiterate, but also possessing unparalleled fighting skills.
After realizing the horror of her capabilities, she fled her father and eventually found refuge with Batman. He trained her and she adopted the Batgirl mantle, working to overcome her communication difficulties and learn to be a hero. She briefly relinquished the Batgirl identity to Stephanie Brown.
Cassandra has been a member of various teams, including the Birds of Prey and the Outsiders. She has a complex relationship with her parents, struggling to escape their influence. Though she is now known as Orphan, she will always be remembered as an important Batgirl.
