Cassandra Cain, also known as Batgirl, debuted in Batman #567 (July 1999) as part of the "No Man's Land" storyline.
She is the daughter of assassins David Cain and Lady Shiva. Trained from birth to be the ultimate martial artist, Cassandra was intentionally deprived of language and social skills, instead learning to "read" body language and predict movements with incredible accuracy. This made her a formidable fighter, but emotionally stunted.
After realizing the horror of her father's actions, Cassandra fled and eventually came under the wing of Batman. He helped her overcome her communication difficulties and use her abilities for good. She adopted the mantle of Batgirl, becoming a protector of Gotham City.
