Black Mask, whose real name is Roman Sionis, is a prominent villain in DC Comics, known for his ruthlessness and obsession with masks. He first appeared in Batman #386 (August 1985).

Born into a wealthy and neglectful family, Roman developed a deep-seated resentment for Gotham's elite. This hatred intensified when his parents arranged a marriage for him with a socialite, which he despised.

After a series of business failures, Roman's parents died in a suspicious fire, leaving him in charge of their company, Janus Cosmetics. His mismanagement led to further financial ruin, and a disfigured face due to a botched product launch. Driven mad, Roman carved a mask from his father's ebony casket, assuming the identity of Black Mask.

Black Mask is typically depicted as a criminal mastermind who uses torture and psychological manipulation to control Gotham's underworld. He leads the False Face Society, a gang of criminals who wear different masks to conceal their identities. Black Mask's signature black skull mask is a symbol of his cruelty and twisted view of the world.
