Roman Sionis, better known as Black Mask, is a notorious Gotham City crime lord and recurring foe of Batman. Born into a wealthy, image-obsessed family, Sionis inherited his father's Janus Cosmetics company. However, his poor business decisions led to its downfall and a bailout by Wayne Enterprises.

Fueled by resentment towards Bruce Wayne and his own parents, Sionis murdered his parents and attempted to destroy Wayne Enterprises. Batman intervened, and during a struggle in the Janus Cosmetics factory, Sionis was exposed to chemical burns. This disfigured his face, leaving him with a skull-like appearance.

Driven insane by the incident, Sionis carved a black mask from his father's ebony coffin, adopting the identity of Black Mask. He became the head of a powerful criminal empire, known for his ruthlessness, sadism, and proficiency in torture. He often uses masks laced with mind-altering drugs to control his victims and enemies.

Black Mask's primary motivation is power and control. He seeks to dominate Gotham's underworld and exact revenge on those he perceives as having wronged him, particularly Batman. He's also been connected to prominent DC villain organizations, and has at times controlled the Gotham underworld.
