Black Mask, created by Doug Moench and Tom Mandrake, first appeared in Batman #386 (August 1985).
Roman Sionis is a Gotham City villain known for his sadistic nature and obsession with masks. Born into a wealthy and callous family, Roman harbored resentment towards his parents and the social elite of Gotham.
Following a disastrous business venture that bankrupted his family's company, Roman was further enraged when Bruce Wayne bought out the business. Driven to madness, he murders his parents and attempts to kill Wayne.
His face becomes permanently disfigured after an accident in his family's business. From that day on, he adopts the persona of Black Mask, crafting a mask from the remains of his ebony casket. He subsequently leads a criminal empire, employing torture and manipulation to achieve his goals.
