Nightmare is the central antagonist of the Soulcalibur series of fighting games. He is the physical embodiment of Soul Edge, a cursed sword, and exists as its will made manifest.

Originally, Nightmare was Siegfried Schtauffen, a young German knight driven mad by the sword's influence and his own guilt over accidentally killing his father. Soul Edge corrupted Siegfried, transforming him into the azure knight Nightmare.

As Nightmare, he travels the world seeking to consume souls and empower Soul Edge, spreading chaos and destruction in his wake. His fighting style is a brutal and powerful mix of Siegfried's original techniques, combined with the dark energy of Soul Edge. He often wields the sword in a berserk fashion.

Throughout the series, Nightmare's form and motivations evolve as he battles various heroes and is sometimes temporarily separated from Soul Edge. He remains a persistent threat, constantly seeking to regain control and unleash the sword's power upon the world.
