Dr. Kirk Langstrom is Man-Bat, a tragic figure in the DC universe. A zoologist specializing in bats, Langstrom was going deaf and became obsessed with their echolocation abilities. He believed he could extract and use these abilities to restore his hearing.

In his lab, Langstrom developed an extract from bat DNA. Driven by desperation, he tested the formula on himself. While it restored his hearing, it also triggered a horrifying transformation. He mutated into a monstrous bat-like creature: Man-Bat.

Though occasionally portrayed as a villain due to his bestial nature and loss of control, Langstrom has also sought a cure and attempted to use his knowledge for good. His first appearance was in Detective Comics #400 (June 1970).
