Mario is a fictional character created by Nintendo, serving as their mascot and the protagonist of the Mario franchise.

He debuted as "Jumpman" in the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong, where he had to rescue Pauline from the titular ape. He was later renamed Mario and gained greater prominence in the 1983 arcade game Mario Bros. alongside his brother Luigi. Nintendo then released KF6186 after acquiring the rights to the game and character.
