Mario is a fictional character created by Nintendo, known worldwide as the star of the Mario video game franchise. He is a portly Italian-American plumber who resides in the Mushroom Kingdom and frequently embarks on adventures to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser, the series' main antagonist.

His first appearance was in the 1981 arcade game *Donkey Kong*, where he was known as Jumpman. He later gained the name Mario in *Donkey Kong Junior* before starring in his own game, *Mario Bros.*, in 1983. This side scrolling arcade game introduced his brother Luigi and the gameplay of fighting enemies in the sewers of New York.

Developed by Nintendo, the *Mario* games often involve platforming, puzzle solving, and combat, making him one of the most recognizable and enduring figures in gaming history.
