Gandalf the Grey, also known as Mithrandir by the Elves, is a pivotal figure in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. He is an Istari, one of a group of Maia (angelic beings) sent to Middle-earth in the guise of wizards to aid the free peoples against Sauron.
