Gandalf the Grey is a wizard from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth, first appearing in *The Hobbit*.

He is one of the Istari, a group of powerful beings sent to Middle Earth to aid the free peoples against the threat of Sauron. Gandalf is known for his wisdom, his skill with magic, and his tendency to meddle in the affairs of Hobbits, Men, Elves, and Dwarves alike.

In *The Hobbit*, Gandalf orchestrates Bilbo Baggins's adventure with Thorin Oakenshield and his company, guiding and protecting them throughout their quest to reclaim Erebor. He is a key figure in the fight against the Necromancer, who is later revealed to be Sauron.
