Biography:
Gandalf the White is a central figure in J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy, The Lord of the Rings. Initially known as Gandalf the Grey, he is one of the Istari, a group of Maiar spirits sent to Middle-earth by the Valar in the guise of wizards.
His original name in Valinor was Olórin. He journeyed to Middle-earth around the year 1000 of the Third Age. His mission was to aid the free peoples against the rising power of Sauron, but he was forbidden to directly confront him with power.
During the War of the Ring, Gandalf played a pivotal role, guiding the Fellowship of the Ring and ultimately sacrificing himself to defeat the Balrog in the Mines of Moria. He was then resurrected by Eru Ilúvatar and returned as Gandalf the White, possessing greater wisdom and authority.
As Gandalf the White, he assumed Saruman's position as head of the White Council. He helped lead the forces of good to victory against Sauron and aided in the crowning of Aragorn as King of Gondor. After the war, he sailed back to Valinor with the other Elves and Ring-bearers, marking the end of the Third Age.
