Dr. Kirk Langstrom, a zoologist specializing in bats, sought to cure his growing deafness through gene therapy. He created a serum using bat DNA, believing it held the key to restoring his hearing. However, upon injecting himself with the formula, Langstrom underwent a monstrous transformation.

He became Man-Bat, a humanoid bat-creature possessing enhanced strength, flight, and echolocation. Driven by primal instincts, Man-Bat was initially a threat to Gotham City, often battling Batman. His transformations were uncontrollable, leading to periods where Langstrom lost his human consciousness entirely.

In the Rebirth continuity, Langstrom actively tries to manage his condition, often seeking Batman's help. He's occasionally been portrayed as an anti-hero, even working with Batman on cases involving other mutated creatures. He continues his research, searching for a permanent cure while grappling with the monstrous side of his dual existence.
