General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, a longtime antagonist of the Hulk, is the Red Hulk. Frustrated by his inability to defeat the original Hulk, Ross undergoes a procedure that transforms him into a powerful, gamma-irradiated being. Unlike Bruce Banner, Ross retains his intellect and tactical mind in his transformed state.
Initially, Red Hulk's identity was shrouded in mystery, as he carried out violent acts against various Marvel heroes and villains. His powers mirror the Hulk's, including superhuman strength, durability, and regenerative abilities. However, Red Hulk absorbs energy, particularly gamma radiation, to further augment his powers. He also possesses the ability to project heat. His initial weakness was a tendency to overheat and weaken when overexerting his powers, eventually reverting back to Ross, but this was later overcome.
His motives were initially unclear, seemingly driven by a desire to eliminate threats to national security, albeit through extremely aggressive means. He eventually joined forces with other heroes, blurring the lines between villain and anti-hero. He has served as a member of various teams, including the Avengers and the Thunderbolts, demonstrating a complex character arc from a vengeful general to a reluctant, yet powerful, force for good.
