Bruce Banner is a brilliant physicist and scientist in the Marvel Universe, primarily known for his alter ego, the Hulk. Born to Brian and Rebecca Banner, Bruce displayed exceptional intelligence from a young age.
During a gamma bomb test he designed and oversaw, Banner intervened to save teenager Rick Jones from the blast radius. He was exposed to a massive dose of gamma radiation. This exposure irrevocably altered his physiology.
As a result, when experiencing heightened stress, anger, or fear, Banner transforms into the Hulk, a massive, incredibly strong, and often rage-fueled green humanoid. He struggles constantly to control this transformation and the Hulk's destructive tendencies. Banner seeks a cure, perpetually working to contain the Hulk and protect others from his destructive rampages.
Despite the dangers of the Hulk, Banner's scientific expertise has proven invaluable to various superhero teams, most notably the Avengers, whom he has allied himself with on numerous occasions.
