Ghost Rider is the name of several antiheroes appearing in Marvel Comics. The first Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze, debuted in Marvel Spotlight #5 (August 1972).
Johnny Blaze made a deal with the demon Mephisto to save his surrogate father, Crash Simpson, from a terminal illness. In exchange for Crash's life, Blaze's soul was bound to Mephisto. Crash recovered but died soon after in a stunt.
The binding of Blaze's soul to the demon Zarathos turned him into the Ghost Rider. He is a skeletal figure wreathed in hellfire and riding a mystical motorcycle. Ghost Rider seeks vengeance on the wicked, using his supernatural powers like the Penance Stare, which forces wrongdoers to experience the pain they inflicted on others.
While Johnny Blaze is the most well-known version of Ghost Rider, other characters have also taken on the mantle, each with their own unique origin and powers.
