Luke Skywalker, in The Last Jedi, is a legendary Jedi Master living in self-imposed exile on the remote island of Ahch-To. Haunted by his past failure to train Ben Solo (Kylo Ren), and the subsequent rise of the First Order, Luke has become disillusioned with the Jedi Order and his role in the galaxy.
He initially refuses to train Rey, who seeks him out to rekindle the Resistance. Luke believes that the Jedi's time has passed and that their influence only leads to further conflict. His isolation has made him cynical, a stark contrast to the hopeful hero of the original trilogy.
However, through encounters with Rey and the spirit of Yoda, Luke begins to reconsider his views. He ultimately chooses to project himself across the galaxy to confront Kylo Ren, buying the Resistance time to escape the First Order. This act of immense Force power exhausts him, leading to his peaceful death and becoming one with the Force. He dies a legend, inspiring hope throughout the galaxy.
