Kaine Parker, first appearing as Scarlet Spider in Spider-Man #5, is a complex character in the Marvel Universe. He's the first and most flawed clone of Peter Parker, created by the Jackal.
Due to the imperfect cloning process, Kaine possesses a degenerative condition that affects his physical appearance and grants him slightly enhanced versions of Spider-Man's powers. These include greater strength and speed, and a "mark of Kaine," a burning touch.
Initially a villain, Kaine's story is one of redemption. He often acts as an anti-hero, walking the line between vigilante and criminal. He has assumed the Scarlet Spider identity at times to try and do good, and his complex relationship with Peter Parker remains a key part of his character.
