Hellboy, created by Mike Mignola, first appeared in *Next Men #1* (Dark Horse Comics, March 1993) as a promotional insert, and later in *Hellboy: Seed of Destruction #1* (April 1994). He is a demon summoned to Earth as an infant by Nazi occultists during World War II.

Instead of serving dark purposes, Hellboy was intercepted by the Allied forces, specifically Professor Trevor Bruttenholm, who raised him as his son. Growing to possess superhuman strength, endurance, and a Right Hand of Doom made of stone, he dedicates his life to fighting paranormal threats.

Working for the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD), Hellboy confronts various monsters, demons, and supernatural entities, often grappling with his own demonic heritage and the destiny he was meant to fulfill. He is known for his sardonic wit, fondness for cats, and resistance to his prophesied role as a harbinger of the apocalypse.
