Hellboy is a fictional comic book character created by Mike Mignola. He first appeared in San Diego Comic-Con Comics #2 in August 1993.
Born in 1944 on Earth, Hellboy, whose birth name is Anung Un Rama, was summoned to Earth as an infant by Nazi occultists during World War II. He was discovered by Allied forces and subsequently raised by Professor Trevor Bruttenholm at a U.S. Army Air Force base.
Growing to adulthood, Hellboy became a prominent agent of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD), an organization dedicated to protecting the world from paranormal threats. Distinctive for his red skin, horns (which he files down), a long tail, and an oversized right hand made of stone (the "Right Hand of Doom"), Hellboy grapples with his destiny as a being destined to bring about the end of the world, while choosing to fight on the side of humanity.
The character, published by Dark Horse Comics, has starred in numerous comic book series, mini-series, and one-shots, showcasing his adventures and struggles against various supernatural enemies.
