Biography:
Dr. Fate is a powerful sorcerer in the DC Universe. Debuting in More Fun Comics #55 (May 1940), the mantle of Dr. Fate has been held by several individuals throughout DC history. The source of Dr. Fate's powers is the Helm of Nabu, an ancient artifact containing the consciousness of Nabu, a Lord of Order.
When a person dons the Helm, they gain access to immense magical abilities, including spellcasting, telekinesis, flight, and invulnerability. However, wearing the Helm often comes at the cost of personal identity, as Nabu's will frequently overrides the wearer's own. Consequently, Dr. Fate's personality and motivations can vary greatly depending on who is wearing the Helm.
Over the decades, many characters have worn the Helm. While Nabu has also been a powerful individual by himself, the helmet has often provided control, or a partnership with a worthy individual such as Kent Nelson. This has led to many stories in the comics revolving around individuals accepting or rejecting the fate of the helm and it's powers.
