Biography:
Dr. Kirk Langstrom is the tragic figure behind the monstrous Man-Bat in DC comics. First appearing in Detective Comics #400 (1970), Langstrom was a zoologist specializing in bats. He developed a serum, intended to grant humans enhanced sonar abilities, using bat DNA.
Believing it would cure his own impending deafness, Langstrom tested the serum on himself. While it did improve his hearing, it also transformed him into a grotesque, bat-like creature. He possessed superhuman strength, speed, and razor-sharp claws, but lost his human intellect.
As Man-Bat, Langstrom often plagued Gotham City. He would sometimes regain control, developing an antidote to revert back to his human form. However, the transformation and ensuing battles with Batman frequently caused psychological trauma and lingering side effects, continuing the cycle of transformation. Langstrom's struggle makes him a sympathetic villain, torn between science and monstrosity.
