Biography:
The Jiangshi, often referred to as a "Chinese hopping vampire" or "zombie," gained significant popularity in Hong Kong cinema, particularly in the horror comedy genre.
A notable early appearance of the Jiangshi in film is in the 1985 movie Mr. Vampire. The film features a variety of Jiangshi, typically depicted with stiff limbs, outstretched arms, and a penchant for hopping.
The Jiangshi's appearance is characterized by Qing Dynasty official robes and a paper talisman attached to their forehead, believed to control their movements. A specific variation, recognizable by its blue clothing and small stature, is sometimes referred to colloquially as the "Little Chinese Vampire with Charm (Blue)", although he's not a specific character with a definitive name but rather a recurring, popular design.
These Jiangshi are vulnerable to various elements like sticky rice, mirrors, and specific spells or incantations performed by Taoist priests. Mr. Vampire and subsequent films solidified the Jiangshi's iconic image within popular culture.
