Daenerys Targaryen is a central character in the HBO television series *Game of Thrones*, based on George R.R. Martin's *A Song of Ice and Fire* novels. She first appears in the series' pilot episode, "Winter Is Coming."
Daenerys, often called Dany, begins the series as a timid and vulnerable young woman living in exile with her older brother, Viserys. She is sold into marriage to Khal Drogo, a powerful Dothraki warlord.
Over the course of the series, Daenerys transforms into a strong and independent leader. She gains control of Drogo's khalasar after his death and eventually becomes the "Mother of Dragons" after hatching three dragon eggs.
