Daenerys Targaryen, portrayed by Emilia Clarke, is a central character in the HBO TV show *Game of Thrones*. She first appears in the show's pilot episode, "Winter Is Coming."
Daenerys, often called Dany, is the exiled princess of the Targaryen dynasty, the former rulers of Westeros. She begins the series as a naive and frightened young woman, forced into marriage with the Dothraki warlord Khal Drogo.
Through her experiences, including the death of her brother Viserys, and the death of her husband she emerges as a strong and independent leader. She becomes known as the "Mother of Dragons" after hatching three dragons from petrified eggs.
