The Mad Hatter is a recurring Batman villain, notably appearing in Batman: The Animated Series. His real name is Jervis Tetch.
In Batman: The Animated Series, he is portrayed as a brilliant but socially awkward scientist obsessed with Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. He utilizes mind-control technology, often disguised as hats, to manipulate others into recreating scenes from the story. His obsession with Alice extends to kidnapping young women who resemble the literary character.
While the comic book character debuted earlier, the Mad Hatter's animated version solidified his image as a creepy, diminutive, and psychologically disturbed villain. His first appearance in Batman TAS was episode 13 "Mad as a Hatter".
