Sub-Zero is a prominent character in the Mortal Kombat fighting game franchise. There have been two primary characters taking on the Sub-Zero mantle; the elder brother Bi-Han, and his younger brother Kuai Liang. Bi-Han first appeared in the original Mortal Kombat game.
Both brothers are Lin Kuei assassins with the ability to control ice. After Bi-Han's death at the hands of Scorpion, Kuai Liang assumes the Sub-Zero identity.
Kuai Liang’s Sub-Zero eventually becomes a more heroic figure, dedicated to protecting Earthrealm. He masters his cryomancy to an even greater extent, sometimes referred to as ‘Absolute Zero’ reflecting his mastery of the cold.
