Biography:
Marcus Flavius Aquila is the protagonist of Rosemary Sutcliff's historical adventure novel, The Eagle of the Ninth, later adapted as the film The Eagle and the film The Other Fellow, and partially adapted as the film Centurion. He is a young Roman centurion stationed in Roman Britain in the 2nd century AD.

Marcus is the son of a Roman officer who served in the Ninth Legion, Hispania, and never returned home. Eager to prove himself and restore his family's honor, he seeks a posting to Britain.

Early in his military career, Marcus is seriously wounded in battle, forcing him to leave the army. Following a period of convalescence, he becomes obsessed with finding out what happened to the lost Ninth Legion, who marched north into Caledonia and were never seen again. He embarks on a dangerous quest beyond Hadrian's Wall, accompanied by his British slave, Esca, to recover the lost Eagle of the Ninth, the legion's standard, and uncover the truth behind its disappearance.
