Jean Grey (codenamed Phoenix, Marvel Girl) is a mutant born with telepathic and telekinetic abilities. A founding member of the X-Men, she was recruited by Professor Charles Xavier as a teenager to join his school for gifted youngsters and fight for mutant-human coexistence.
Her powers initially were limited, but grew exponentially, eventually making her one of the most powerful mutants on Earth. This power stemmed in part from her connection to the Phoenix Force, a cosmic entity of life and rebirth. The Phoenix Force amplified Jean's abilities to cosmic levels, but also made her susceptible to corruption, leading to the creation of the Dark Phoenix persona.
Jean's journey has been marked by death and resurrection. The Phoenix Force has seemingly granted her the ability to be reborn, making her a recurring figure in X-Men lore. She has been instrumental in numerous key events, from battling Magneto and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants to helping avert intergalactic conflicts.
