Alexei Shostakov, known as Red Guardian, is a character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
He first appeared in the film Black Widow (2021). Red Guardian is portrayed as the Soviet Union's super-soldier counterpart to Captain America.
In the MCU, Alexei is a former spy who was a part of a deep-cover mission, posing as the husband of Melina Vostokoff and the father figure to Natasha Romanoff and Yelena Belova, all part of an undercover family unit in Ohio. This family unit was established to secure key intel for the Soviet Union.
Despite his imposing stature and claims of heroism, the MCU version of Red Guardian is often portrayed as boastful, past his prime, and somewhat delusional about his past glories and supposed battles with Captain America.
