Mister Negative, also known as Martin Li, is a complex Marvel character with a dual nature. His first appearance was in *The Amazing Spider-Man* #546 (2008). Born as an undocumented Chinese immigrant, he was smuggled into America by the Snakeheads gang.
During the transportation process, he stole the identity of a man named Martin Li, a name he would adopt and use to build a philanthropic empire in New York City. The true Li was found to be a cruel individual, in contrast to the man he would become.
Experimentation involving a synthetic drug, intended to recreate the powers of Cloak and Dagger, resulted in his transformation. This split him into two distinct personas: the benevolent philanthropist Martin Li, and the villainous Mister Negative. Mr. Negative is characterized by his photonegative appearance and his corrupted use of the Lightforce and Darkforce powers.
As Mister Negative, he becomes a powerful crime lord who is a brutal and strategic leader. While Martin Li appears to focus on charitable works, the evil Mister Negative often undermines his counterpart's efforts through criminal activity, creating a constant internal struggle within the character.
