Mister Negative first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #546 (January 2008). He is a major crime lord operating in New York City's Chinatown who possesses both a "positive" persona, the altruistic Martin Li, and a "negative" persona, the ruthless Mister Negative.

His origin involves being a member of the Snakeheads gang smuggled into the United States. He stole the identity of Martin Li, a man attempting to reach America to repay debts. During an experiment, he gained his dual nature and superhuman abilities including enhanced strength and speed.

Mister Negative can generate and control the Darkforce and Lightforce energies and corrupt others into serving him. He is a formidable opponent of Spider-Man and a major player in the criminal underworld.
