Luther Manning's story begins as a US Army soldier who is critically injured and subsequently resurrected as Deathlok by the sinister Simon Ryker. Manning's brain is implanted into a cyborg body, granting him enhanced strength, durability, and weaponry.
Deathlok's first appearance was in Astonishing Tales #25 (August 1974), where readers were introduced to the dystopian future in which Manning's transformation took place.
