The first game in the franchise was released on June 23, 1991 (also Sonic's birthday) in order to provide Sega with a mascot to rival Nintendo's flagship character Mario. His design is characterized by his blue fur, spiky quills, and green eyes. Sonic's primary goal in the games is to defeat the evil Dr. Eggman (also known as Dr. Robotnik), who seeks to conquer the world and use animals as power sources for his robotic creations.
