X, also known as Rockman X in Japan, is a central character in Capcom's Mega Man X video game series, first appearing in Mega Man X (1993) for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.
He is an advanced Reploid, a sentient robot with human-level intelligence and the ability to make his own decisions, unlike earlier generation robots who were programmed with set behaviors. Dr. Light created X but sealed him away, fearing his potential for destruction if he malfunctioned.
Years later, Dr. Cain discovered X and used his design as the basis for creating mass-produced Reploids. However, these later Reploids were prone to going "Maverick," turning against humanity, leading to the Maverick Wars. X, burdened by his unique abilities and the consequences of his creation, fights against the Mavericks to protect humans and other Reploids.
