Guardian is a name used by multiple characters in DC Comics, often connected to Superman or projects related to genetic engineering.
The original Guardian, James Jacob "Jim" Harper, first appeared in *Star-Spangled Comics* #7 (April 1942). He was a police officer who became a vigilante after being frustrated with criminals evading justice. Harper was trained by Joe Morgan, the same man who trained Wildcat and the first Black Canary.
Harper wore a bulletproof costume and carried a shield, leading to comparisons with Captain America. He fought crime in Metropolis, often teaming up with the Newsboy Legion.
Later storylines revealed that Harper was a clone created by Project Cadmus, a genetic engineering project. Other characters who have taken on the Guardian identity are often connected to Cadmus or Superman's supporting cast.
