Pennywise, often referred to as "It," is a malevolent entity and the primary antagonist in Stephen King's horror novel *It*. The character's most recognizable form is that of a clown, used to lure children to their doom.
Pennywise's origins are otherworldly, arriving on Earth long ago. The creature awakens periodically to feed on the fears of children in Derry, Maine.
Pennywise gained widespread recognition through adaptations of *It*, most notably in the 1990 TV movie *It* starring Tim Curry, and later in the 2017 movie *It* and its 2019 sequel *It: Chapter Two*, where the clown was portrayed by Bill Skarsgård.
