Hawkgirl, specifically the Kendra Saunders version, plays a pivotal role in DC Comics' "Blackest Night" event. Following her death and resurrection prior to the event, she finds herself uniquely positioned in the fight against the Black Lanterns.
Due to the complex and fractured nature of her past lives and connections to both Thanagar and her soulmate Hawkman, Hawkgirl is caught in a limbo state. This limbo prevents her from being fully claimed by Nekron, the architect of the Black Lantern Corps, but also leaves her vulnerable.
Together with Hawkman, she becomes a target of the Black Lanterns, undead versions of fallen heroes and villains. Their complicated love story and cycle of death and rebirth are exploited by Nekron to further his goals of eliminating all emotion and life in the universe. Ultimately, while initially succumbing to the Black Lantern rings along with Hawkman, they are freed and assist in the final battle, their past and future intertwined with the fate of the living.
