James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes is a Marvel character known for his complex history as both a hero and a villain.
Bucky Barnes' first Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance was in the 2011 film, Captain America: The First Avenger, portrayed by actor Sebastian Stan. He is introduced as Steve Rogers' best friend and a fellow soldier during World War II.
Presumed dead after a fall from a train during a mission, Bucky is recovered and brainwashed by Hydra, becoming the Winter Soldier, a deadly assassin. He operates as a brainwashed assassin for decades carrying out many high profile assassinations. His past is later revealed to him, and he begins a long road to recovery and redemption.
